SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team will welcome in No. 3 seed Iowa this Sunday, March 24, for second round action of the NIT inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center for a 7 p.m. (MDT) tip-off as the two square off on the hardwood floor for just the second time in program history. Dave Feldman and Corey Williams will once again have the call on ESPN2 for fans as the Runnin' Utes and Hawkeyes duke it out for a spot in the NIT quarterfinals.
BLOCK PARTY
Utah combined for 11 teams as a block – 5 of which belonged to the program leader,
Branden Carlson. The 11 denials by Utah is tied for third-most in a single-game at Utah with the latest occurring two seasons ago at Washington on Jan. 29, 2022. The other two instances came against Arizona State (2/6/15) and Colorado State (2/3/10).

Branden Carlson has now recorded 20-plus points in at least 10 games for the second-straight year. He's also the only Runnin' Ute to achieve that feat dating back to 1996-97 per Stats Perform. There have only been eight instances since 1996-97 where a player has recorded 20 points in at least 10 games in a single-season and Carlson owns two of them.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah settled in finally in the second half and took a lead as large as 17 in the game before fending off a feisty UC Irvine time to secure the 84-75 NIT first round victory at home inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Runnin' Utes had four players reach double-figured led by
Branden Carlson's 21 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks.
Gabe Madsen added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists of his own while
Hunter Erickson had 13 points off the bench.
Deivon Smith also had 13 points to go with his 6 rebounds and 10 assists for his 11th double-double of the year. Utah also tied its season-high with 23 dimes as a team – 20 of which came from the starters. Defensively, the Utes had each other's back while covering their own man and accumulated 11 blocks – third-most in a single-game ever in program history.
LOOKING AHEAD
Should the Runnin' Utes be victorious on Sunday, they will get to those the winner of VCU and South Florida. The Rams upset Villanova 70-61 on the road – who was the top-seed in the "Villanova Region" of the bracket. Meanwhile, USF defeated in-state rival UCF 83-77 – who were the fourth-seed in this portion of the bracket.
