SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team cruised past No. 3 seed Iowa Sunday evening with a 91-82 victory in its NIT second round game inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center behind a career-high 31 points from
Gabe Madsen and triple-double from
Deivon Smith.
With the win, Utah is now 21-14 overall on the season – which is the most wins in a season since the 2017-18 squad went 23-12. Smith's fourth triple-double of the year with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists made him the first Pac-12 player since Jason Kidd (Cal) had four during the 1993-94 season. His four triple-doubles also ties him with four other players throughout NCAA history for the third-highest total in a single-season.
Utah is 2-0 all-time against Iowa and now 6-2 when playing in the NIT at home. The Runnin' Utes are also 16-2 inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center – which is tied for the third-most wins at home in program history and the eighth time they have reach that win total in program history. The last time Utah won 16 games at home occurred back in 2014-16 when it went 16-1 back-to-back years at home.
It took both teams a bit of time to break the seal but Iowa (19-5) was the first to score at the 18:01 mark to start a back-and-forth action between both teams. Utah then got hot on the offensive end and scored on five-straight possessions to take an early 14-11 lead at the 11:55 media break.
Utah then took a 22-12 lead on a Madsen 3-pointer before things settled down on both sides. It wasn't until the 4:24 mark did Madsen basically go on a 13-2 run by himself, with the exception of one basket from
Keba Keita, to put the Utes on top 45-27. The sharpshooter first knocked in a three before hitting six-straight free-throws after getting fouled on back-to-back possessions. He then put a bow on the run with a steal top of the key that led to a breakaway drunk all by himself.
Iowa closed out the rest of the half on a 7-3 run, but it was Utah that went into the locker room on top 48-36. Utah's lead was propelled by its efforts on the defensive end where it turned 5 Hawkeye turnovers into a 13-5 edge in points off turnovers.
Madsen had a solid opening frame, scoring 19 points of his 31 points on 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range while Smith added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists.
Iowa slowly cut into the Utah lead midway through the second frame and got as close as 61-56 with 11:39 left to go on a Ben Krikke lay-up. However, an 18-5 run ensued for Utah that was highlighted by four 3-pointers and a pair of dunks – Madsen accounting for three of those triples.
Utah maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way before a flurry for scores from Brock Harding and Patrick McCaffery brought the Runnin' Utes final win total down to 91-82.
Madsen becomes the second Runnin' Ute this season to score 31 points in a single-game, knocking down 7-of-15 from beyond the arc with a perfect 6-for-6 night at the line. It marks the first time Utah has had multiple players score 30-plus points in a game dating back to the 1996-97 season per Stats Perform and just the 22nd instance where a Ute scored 30-plus in a game since 1996-97. The five games this season with a player scoring 30-plus points ties the mark Keith Van Horn set himself back in 1996-97.
BC MOMENTS IN TIME
With 4:54 on the clock in the first half, a rim rocker from
Branden Carlson saw became the program's fifth all-time leading scorer when he scored his 1,850th point to pass Mike Newlin (1,849; 1968-71). The South Jordan native finished the game with 12 points and pushed his career total to 1,858 points.
