SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Colter McAnelly made his first collegiate start and had a career-best five strikeouts, but the Utah Baseball team was topped by Santa Clara, 5-2, on Tuesday at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Third baseman
Michael Davinni led the Utes at the plate with a 2-for-4 evening, doubling and scoring a run.
Tyler Quinn and
Bruer Webster also notched hits, but that would be all for the club as Utah was held to four hits on the night. Webster also drove in both of the team's runs with a sac fly in the fifth inning and a perfectly-placed bunt single in the seventh.
McAnelly went 4.2 innings in his start, allowing two earned runs on two hits and a pair of walks.
Bransen Kuehl fanned three of the five batters he faced, while
Payton Riske and
Jaden Harris also saw time out of the bullpen.
Utah would allow two in the first frame, going scoreless through the first four innings. The Utes plated their first run in the top of the fifth, beginning with a
Kaden Carpenter leadoff walk, followed by a single to left center from Davinni. Webster then smacked a sacrifice fly into foul territory in left field, scoring Carpenter and cutting the Santa Clara lead in half, 2-1.
The Broncos added one more run in the bottom half of the fifth before Utah would go to the bullpen for their first pitching change of the game. Kuehl made his third appearance of the season on the hill of the Utes, coming in for 1.1 innings of work, recording a season-high three strikeouts with one hit allowed.
Webster would come up clutch at the plate for the Utes again in the seventh, laying down a bunt single of beauty. Getting it all started in the seventh would be Davinni's double down the line in left, before
Cameron Gurney would push him over to third with a groundball to the right side. Webster's bunt found its way into no man's land, as the Santa Clara defense could not make a play and Davinni came in for the second Utah run of the game.
Harris pitched the final 1.1 for the Utes, tallying three strikeouts and allowing two hits.
