SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team fell to the CSUN Matadors 18-4 on Sunday night at Smith's Ballpark, splitting the two-game series.
Hunter Antillon led the way for the Utes offensively, going 3-for-4 and finishing a triple short of the cycle. His home run was Antillon's fourth of the season and his third straight game with a big fly, while three hits was a season-high for the Utah catcher.
Landon Frei had his second straight multi-hit game with a for 2-for-3 night and scored a run, while
Drake Digiorno extended his reached-base streak to 19 straight games played. In the end, Utah (21-9) was unable to keep up with a string of big innings for the Matadors.
CSUN struck early and often, scoring in all but two innings with its most profitable frames coming in the first (5), sixth (4) and eighth (4) innings. Utah crossed the plate four times, all in individual innings with four different Utes recording an RBI.
The Matadors plated five runs in the top of the first inning and captured a lead they wouldn't give up. Utah responded quickly in the home half of the first as
Kai Roberts drove in
Core Jackson after a leadoff walk.
Antillon crushed a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning. Jackson picked up an RBI in the seventh inning with his third triple of the season, and
Kaden Carpenter tacked on the final Utah run in the eighth with a two-out single up the middle to score Frei.
Six different Utah pitchers saw time on the mound for the Utes, including
Michael Alan Stanford's first collegiate appearance and the first outing as a Ute for
Mason Kelley. Catcher
Jack Kleveno and southpaw
Billy Bird each made their first Smith's Ballpark appearances as well.
