SALT LAKE CITY – A four-run eighth inning for BYU broke a 3-3 tie as he Utah Baseball team was unable to rally and fell by a 7-3 score at Smith's Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Core Jackson sparked the offense with a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom half of the seventh inning, but the Utes (21-10) weren't able to score in the final two innings.
Freshman pitcher
Colter McAnelly made the start on the bump for Utah, marking his fourth start of the season. McAnelly put in a quality start on Tuesday night, throwing five complete innings, only giving up three hits and one earned run while striking out seven Cougars—one strikeout shy of his career-high.
Tyler Quinn contributed a 2-for-4 night at the plate with an RBI single, while Jackson's home run in the seventh inning was his second of the season.
Drake Digiorno walked twice to extend his reached-base streak to 20 consecutive games played.
BYU opened the scoring in the second inning via a sacrifice fly to earn a 1-0 lead, after a Utah error. The Utes responded quickly in the home half of the second inning, when
Landon Frei singled up the middle to lead off the inning and later advanced to second base after a pickoff error with one out. Quinn drove Frei home and leveled the game at one run apiece.
McAnelly gave up his only earned run in the top half of the fourth inning with a two-out solo shot from the Cougars, as the visitors retook the lead, 2-1 and ended a stretch of eight straight batters retired by McAnelly. Utah was able to put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half of the fourth but were unable to cross home.
Continuing his stellar outing, McAnelly picked up his sixth and seventh strikeouts in the visiting half of the fifth inning. After a 1-2-3 bottom frame,
Jackson Elder (2-2) relieved Utah's starter in the sixth as the Cougars stretched their lead to 3-1.
The Smith's Ballpark crowd of 2,363 came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning as Utah started stringing hits together.
Hunter Antillon picked up a one-out single, and after Jackson stepped into the batter's box, he laced the 3-1 pitch onto the left field berm to tie the score, 3-3.
BYU erupted in the eighth inning as a leadoff single, followed by an error on a bunt placed runners on second and third.
Bransen Kuehl entered out of the bullpen as the Utes intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases with no outs. On his first pitch thrown, Kuehl induced a 5-2-3 double-play and prevented any runs from scoring.
After another intentional walk to load the bases, BYU hit two more singles to take a 6-3 lead. Another Utah error plated an additional run to bring the game to its final score of 7-3.

The Utes jump back into Pac-12 Conference play, traveling to Phoenix Municipal Stadium for a three-game series with the Arizona State Sun Devils. The series starts on Friday evening with the first pitch slated for 7:30 p.m. MDT on the ASU Live Stream-2 feed.
