The First Pitch: Things to Know
After a bye weekend plus a midweek rivalry contest, the Utah Baseball team resumes Pac-12 Conference play on Friday as the Utes open a three-game series at Arizona State. First pitch in Friday's opener is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. MDT (6:30 p.m. Arizona Time) inside Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
- Utah, which received votes for the third straight week in the NCBWA Division I poll, is currently fifth in the Pac-12 standings. The Utes are one win away from matching their 2023 season total of 22 wins.
- Gary Henderson's club reached the 20-win mark in their first 28 games, the fastest in recorded program history. It includes 14 victories in which the Utes trailed at some point in the game. Previously, the Utah club known to reach 20 wins the fastest was in 1997; that year the team started 20-12-1.
- The Utes are looking to get back on the winning track after back-to-back losses to CSUN (April 7) and BYU (April 9). In Utah's rivalry game on Tuesday night, the Utes used a two-run homer by Core Jackson to tie the score at three in the seventh inning, but the Cougars pushed four across in the eighth to take a 7-3 final at Smith's Ballpark.
- Utah is looking for its first series win over the Sun Devils since a three-game sweep during the 2017 season. The last time the Utes won a series in Phoenix was in 2016, including a rubber game victory at ASU. Though ASU took the first two games in last year's series, Utah pulled off an incredible comeback in the series finale. Trailing 6-0 through four innings of play, Utah countered with 11 unanswered runs and took the game by an 11-6 score.
- Offensively, the Utes continue to be paced by center fielder Kai Roberts (.370 / .457 / .630), whose batting average ranks third in the Pac-12. It is more than 100 points North of where Roberts finished his junior season in 2023; he also leads the league with 21 stolen bases entering the series. Roberts' .630 slugging percentage slots him fourth in the Pac-12 and includes 12 doubles.
- Roberts follows leadoff man and shortstop Core Jackson in the lineup; the latter is hitting .339 in his first season as a Ute. Jackson (15) trails only Roberts for the most stolen bases in the Pac-12 while he and Roberts are tied for fourth in the conference with three triples apiece.
- In last Friday's series opener vs. CSUN, Micah Ashman recorded his 18th career save and Roberts recorded what was then his 53rd stolen base; both set new Utah program records.
- Approaching the final month of the regular season, Utah remains one of the Pac-12's highest-scoring offenses at 6.8 runs per game. It ranks fourth in the conference and continues a steady climb over the last three seasons. In part thanks to assistant coach Todd Guilliams' guidance, the Utes averaged 6.2 runs per game in 2022 and rose to 6.7 runs per game in '23.
- On the mound, lefty Bryson Van Sickle is coming off a six-inning start last Friday vs. CSUN; the win went on the books as Van Sickle's first decision of the year. Right-hander Merit Jones has gone at least six innings in three straight starts and averaged 6.3 strikeouts per outing. Jones has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his seven starts this season.
- The Utes will return home next week for four game at Smith's Ballpark, beginning with a Tuesday matinee against Utah Valley with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
