PHOENIX – Left-hander
Bryson Van Sickle fired a complete game, three-hit shutout on just 82 pitches, all while the Utah bats were busy putting up 10 runs as the Utes cruised past Arizona State, 10-0, on Friday night in the series opener at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
It was Van Sickle's first complete game at Utah and the first by a Ute since Matthew Sox accomplished the feat in the USC series opener in 2022. He recorded the first shutout by a Utah pitcher since Josh Lapiana did so at Oregon on March 20, 2016; that also happened to be a Maddux as Lapiana threw 96 pitches.
Van Sickle's (2-0) eight strikeouts were a season-high and he walked none. He and the Utah defense retired 14 straight Sun Devils to end the game and ASU never reached the leadoff batter all night—nor did the home club get a runner into scoring position.
The Utah offense went to work for Van Sickle, as seven different Utes had a hit, drove in a run or scored in the ballgame.
Drake Digiorno sparked the club with a two-out, solo home run in the first inning and
TJ Clarkson (3 RBI) went yard just minutes up the road from his hometown of Gilbert, Arizona.
Landon Frei doubled and scored a run as well.
After two quick outs to begin the ballgame, Digiorno turned on the 1-0 pitch and sent it into the Utah bullpen in left field for his fourth big fly of the season.
Van Sickle worked a 1-2-3 first inning and got out of the second on a nice pickoff move to first base, with Digiorno slapping on the tag. From there, ASU mustered singles in the third, fourth and fifth innings—but the lefty shut down the Sun Devils the rest of the way, including with a 6-4-3 double play to end the fourth.
In the top of the fourth Utah took a 2-0 lead with a little one-out rally. Digiorno popped a single into right-center field and took second on a ball in the dirt, being ruled safe at second after an official review. He scored after Clarkson dropped a single into left field on a ball that evaded a nice hustle by ASU shortstop Steven Ondina.
A big sixth inning saw six more runs on the board as the Utes put the game away. Utah reached six straight batters before an out was recorded. Digiorno led off the inning and was hit by the first pitch, then Clarkson clubbed a two-run shot just to the left of the batter's eye, moving the score to 4-0.
Frei was next up and dropped a double into the gap in left center, later scoring on a bases-loaded walk to
Hunter Antillon. Two sac flies and a single scored the trio of
Tyler Quinn,
Michael Davinni and Antillon as the Utes swelled the margin to 8-0.
Antillon scored again in the eighth on a sac fly for
Kai Roberts, then in the ninth
Matt Flaharty sent a first-pitch single to left center that drove in
Dakota Duffalo—in a return to his home state.
