The First Pitch: Things to Know
A stretch of eight straight games along the Wasatch Front wraps up Tuesday for the Utah Baseball team, and it'll be a rivalry matchup with in-state foe BYU coming to Smith's Ballpark. First pitch in the game is set for 6 p.m. MT. The game will air on Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein on play-by-play, while Bill Riley will be on the radio headset via ESPN 700 AM and 92.1 FM.
- Utah has won seven of its last 10 games and is 21-9 overall on the season. The Utes reached the 20-win mark in their first 28 games, the fastest in recorded program history. Previously, the Utah club known to reach 20 wins the fastest was in 1997; that year the team started 20-12-1.
- Utah is looking to bounce back from two losses to BYU in 2023. The Utes won a wild 29-14 contest down in Provo last April, but were one-hit in their first matchup with BYU and dropped the rubber game of the season series, 13-7.
- The Utes are coming off of a 3-1 week that saw the team take both matchups against in-state foe Utah Valley (10-1 and 13-8) before splitting a pair over the weekend vs. CSUN. Friday's matchup with the Matadors saw a pair of program records fall as left-handed pitcher Micah Ashman recorded his 18th career save and center fielder Kai Roberts set a new all-time mark for stolen bases with his 53rd swipe as a Ute.
- Roberts has been among the Pac-12's top hitters this season with a .374 batting average—ranking second in the conference. It is over 100 points North of his .266 clip from the 2023 season, and includes 12 doubles which slot Roberts third in the league for two-baggers.
- Approaching the final six weeks of the regular season, Utah remains one of the Pac-12's highest-scoring offenses at 6.9 runs per game. It ranks fourth in the conference and continues a steady climb over the last three seasons. In part thanks to assistant coach Todd Guilliams' guidance with the hitters, the Utes averaged 6.2 runs per game in 2022 and rose to 6.7 runs per game in '23.
- The trio of TJ Clarkson, Landon Frei and Hunter Antillon have seen the ball well lately, with each hitting above .315 during Utah's last 10 games. Frei in particular has seven hits in his last 10 at bats dating back to Monday's win over UVU. He had a career-high six RBI in Friday's win over CSUN on the strength of a 4-for-4 day with a three-run homer.
- Antillon, the transfer from New Mexico State, had a season-high three hits in Sunday's game against the Matadors and finished a triple short of the cycle. Dating back to the Cal series, he is hitting .324 with four homers and nine RBI. Clarkson, meanwhile, owns a .317 average with 10 RBI in that same timeframe.
- Pac-12 Conference play resumes for the Utes this weekend with a trip to Arizona State. First pitch in the series opener will be on Friday at 7:30 p.m. MDT inside Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
