LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the first time in program history, the University of Utah softball team has had at least one student-athlete earn All-American honors in three consecutive seasons, as sophomore outfielder
Abby Dayton was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Third-Team on Wednesday.
Dayton's recognition comes a year after
Mariah Lopez was chosen as a Third-Team All-American and two years after
Ellessa Bonstrom appeared on the Third-Team All-American roster.
For Dayton, an All-Pac-12 First-Team and All-Pacific Region First-Team pick in 2024, this marks her first All-American selection and comes after a season in which she confounded every pitching staff in the conference. Dayton led the Pac-12 with a .444 regular season average, good enough to win her the Pac-12 Batting Title and the highest by a Ute since 1994. She combined that with a .403 clip in 28 games against Top 75 RPI schools and led her league in triples with six.
Dayton's stat line also included the Pac-12's fourth-best on-base percentage at .510 and she ranked in the top 10 in hits, walks and total bases while crafting a perfect fielding percentage. From March 23 to April 14, the sophomore from California reached base in 33 straight games, the longest such streak by any Pac-12 player in 2024.
