TAIPEI, Taiwan – Utah men's basketball guard
Jerry Huang was officially named to the Chinese Taipei Men's Senior National Team on Tuesday and will compete in the 43rd William Jones Cup the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association announced.
"First and foremost, I want to congratulate Jerry on a tremendous accomplish," Utah head men's basketball coach
Craig Smith said. "Everyone in our program is thrilled for Jerry and his family. It was very important for him to make his national team. What honor to represent his country. This couldn't happen to anyone more deserving than Jerry, who positively impacts so many people. We look forward to following him throughout the summer on his amazing journey, and we look forward to welcoming him back in the fall!"
Huang is heading into his second year as a member of the Runnin' Utes after redshirting last season. The Taipei native spent his prep career at Wasatch Academy before joining the Utah men's basketball program in 2023-24.
"I'm extremely proud and excited to be selected to the Chinese Taipei Men's Senior National Team," Huang said. "I can't wait to join these great players and coaches in Taiwan. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to represent my hometown and compete with my fellow countrymen."
The 6-2 guard is headed back to train with the senior national team and wear No. 13 as they prepare for this year's Jones Cup – which is set to be played inside Xinzhuang Stadium. Chinese Taipei will have two teams participating in the tournament with the men's senior national team playing as the "Blue" team.
The "William Jones Cup" aka the Jones Cup began in 1977 and has only been skipped six times – three of which was due to COVID-19. The United States of America, which was represented by the UCI men's basketball team last year, are the defending champions after going 8-0 in 2023.
