SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah Women's soccer team suffered its first-ever loss to the Utah Valley Wolverines in program history, at home on Sunday night, falling 2-0. Utah is now 2-2-2 this season, breaking its streak of eight unbeaten games against the Wolverines.Â
Â
Utah, 2-2-2, broke their 7-0-1 matchup record against the Wolverines, 3-3-1, in a 2-0 loss.
Â
"To be honest, this was an embarrassing performance on our part," said head coach
Hideki Nakada, "With the two mistakes that put us the two goals behind, in the end it was too much for our team to overcome."
In the 27
th minute, the Wolverines were the first to hit the net, with a goal from senior forward Faith Webber.
Â
The Utes came out of halftime at a 1-0 deficit, and in an attempt to block a cross, headed the ball into the net for an own goal. This marked the first own goal by the Utes since a 1-0 loss to Arizona on Oct. 29 at Ute Field in the 2023 season. Â
Â
"I want to note that the better team won today," said Nakada. "We didn't deserve to win with the way we came out."
Despite the loss, Utah outshot Utah Valley 11-10, holding a 5-2 advantage on target, tallying a fourth opponent the Utes have outshot this season. Â Â
Â
"If we are going to be a team that is successful in the Big 12, we need to find consistency," said Nakada, Â "And we're going to work hard to get there before we meet with Arizona on Thursday."
