SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team showed poise down the stretch and got back on the win column Tuesday night with its 69-66 victory over Cincinnati inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center to close out its brief homestand.
Â
First-half action was full of short runs and seven lead changes, but was in favor of the Runnin' Utes (12-8, 4-5 Big 12) behind a .667 shooting clip.
Ezra Ausar was once again a force for Utah, scoring 9 of his 11 first-half points in the opening 4:36 minutes of action to help give the Runnin' Utes a narrow 16-14 edge at 11:37 media break.
Â
Cincinnati's Jizzle James kept the Bearcats within striking distance each time the Utes would knock down a couple baskets to keep it a one or two possession game before back-to-back baskets from
Jake Wahlin followed by a smooth jumper from
Mike Sharavjamts to end the half and send Utah into halftime up 40-36.
Â
Utah had a slow start to the second frame, and Cincinnati (12-8, 2-7) took advantage with a 16-4 run to retake the 50-44 lead at the 11:16 mark.
Keanu Dawes finally put an end to the 6:35 minute scoring drought when he knocked both of his free-throws down. Those free-throws would spark an 18-4 run for the Runnin' Utes to give them a 62-54 cushion with 4:59 left to go.
Â
However, the Bearcats would not back down and answered right back with an 8-0 spurt within a 1:27 minute span to tie things up at 62-62 with 3:12 remaining.
Â
With the home-crowd behind them, the Runnin' Utes defense stepped up and held Cincinnati without a field-goal the rest of the way while
Gabe Madsen stepped up to the line and knocked 5-of-6 from the line to seal the victory Tuesday night.
Â
Madsen finished with a game-high 18 points behind 7-of-8 from the charity stripe with four assists. Dawes nearly had a double-double, scoring 12 points on 9 rebounds off the bench for Utah. Ausar closed out with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting despite being hindered with foul trouble most of the second-half. Wahlin had another solid night for Utah, finishing with 8 points on 4-of-7 shooting with 6 rebounds.
