CINCINNATI – Despite a game-high 28 points from
Gabe Madsen in his return to Cincinnati, the Utah men's basketball team dropped a tight contest against the Bearcats 85-75 down the stretch on Tuesday night inside Fifth Third Arena.
Cincinnati drew first blood on Tuesday night, but it was Madsen who drained the first bucket of the evening for Utah (13-11, 5-8 Big 12) coming off a screen for a pull-up 3-pointer in his return back to Fifth Third Arena.
Ezra Ausar would then go on to flex his muscles in the paint for Utah, scoring eight of the next 10 points to bring the Utes within 14-13 of the home team at the under-12 (11:46).
After consecutive baskets from
Lawson Lovering tied things up at 21-21, the Bearcats answered with back-to-back triples from Josh Reed to push the lead back up to 27-21 and force a Utah timeout with 5:25 left in the half.
Some back-and-forth ensued before back-to-back 3-pointers from Madsen and
Keanu Dawes made it a one possession game for Utah (34-32) with 2:14 left on the clock. However, Cincinnati (15-9, 5-8 Big 12) continued its hot shooting from beyond the arc and drained its seventh and eighth 3-pointer of the evening to send the Utes into the locker room down 42-36.
Madsen came out firing on all-cylinders in the second-half, knocking down a pair of long balls just 2:31 minutes in to give Utah the 47-44 lead and forced a timeout from Cincinnati. Three more lead changes would ensue before a 6-0 spurt from the Bearcats forced Utah to call its second timeout with 11:09 left in the game down 64-57.
The former Bearcat would then hit his seventh and eighth 3-pointers of the night, tying a career-high, before
Hunter Erickson would pull one free-throw line extended in front of the Utah bench to force a UC timeout and bring the Runnin' Utes within 68-66 with 8:13 left to go.
Mike Sharavjamts tied things up shortly thereafter with a put-back to tie it up at 68-68 with 7:27 remaining. However, the Utah offense stalled from that point forward and managed to hit just 3-of-12 from the field with 1-of-9 coming from 3-point range to close out the contest.
Madsen's 28 points was a new season-high and was just three points shy of his career-high of 31 points against Iowa last year in the NIT. Lovering, who had 12 first-half points, was held to just 2 points in the second-half on 1-of-3 shooting to finish with 14 points on an efficient 7-for-9 shooting night.
