IRVING, Texas – For the second straight week to open the season, Utah sophomore right-hander
Colter McAnelly has taken home a Big 12 award as the league on Monday named him Pitcher of the Week.
Â
He earned the start last Friday as Utah had an 8-0 shutout victory at San Diego State in the opening game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy series. McAnelly went a career-long seven innings in the combined shutout, becoming the first Utah pitcher since 2022 to strike out 10 batters in one outing.
Â
The native of Cheyenne, Wyoming, recorded his first seven outs by strikeout; McAnelly struck out the side in both the first and second innings before fanning the leadoff man in the third as well. The leadoff batter never reached in seven innings against McAnelly and only one Aztecs runner got past first base in the first six innings. It took until the seventh for SDSU to reach via a walk or get a runner to third base.
Â
SDSU hitters were just 2-for-10 with two outs on his watch.
Â
Utah came home Monday night from the Tony Gwynn Legacy series owning a 7-1 record. It is the second straight season the Utes have started the season with seven wins in their first eight games.
