SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team saw its offense come alive in the second half as it routed Arizona State 99-73 inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center Saturday night to give interim head coach
Josh Eilert his first win since taking over on Monday, Feb. 24.
The 26-point margin of victory is the highest for Utah in Big 12 play this season – passing the 83-62 (+21) victory over Oklahoma State at home on Jan. 11.
The opening 20 minutes of the game was filled with a ton of action with plenty of back-and-forth scoring. Utah (16-13, 8-10 Big 12) struck first and went up with a quick 4-0 spurt to force an Arizona State timeout just 2:07 into the game. The Sun Devils would then go on a 9-2 run to take the lead and had the Utes trailing the rest of the half despite 12 early points from
Ezra Ausar.
As well Ausar was playing, ASU's Joson Sanon was white-hot from the offensive end for the Sun Devils – scoring 20 points on 4-of-5 from deep in the opening frame. Despite shooting .571 from the field in the first half, Arizona State was just as hot (.567) to take a 43-41 lead over Utah at the break thanks to its 3-point shooting (7-for-12).
Second-half started out with a lot of back-and-forth on offense for both teams before the Utah reeled off a 12-6 run to take the 63-58 lead with 11:50 to go with 8 of those 12 points coming from Ausar. Arizona State (13-16, 4-14 Big 12) kept it close out of that media break and made it 63-61 before a 13-0 blitz from the Runnin' Utes pushed their lead to 76-61 behind yet another Ausar bucket.
The Sun Devils got as close as 79-67 with 5:46 remaining before the Utah clamped down on defense and outscored Arizona State 20-6 the rest of the way to secure the win.
Ausar finished with a team-high 25 points, 13 of which came in the second half, on 4 boards and 7-of-10 shooting. Additionally, Ausar accounted for 11 of Utah's 19 made free-throws on Saturday, hitting 11-of-14 from the stripe.
Keanu Dawes was once again electric off the bench for Utah, recording back-to-back double-doubles with 15 points and 11 rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting off the bench. In addition to his fourth double-double of the year, Dawes also dished out 4 assists while shooting 3-of-4 from the line.
Mike Sharavjamts added 14 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 3 blocks on the night behind 3-of-6 from long-range for the Utes.
Mason Madsen came off the bench and added extra firepower for the Utes, finishing with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 dimes on 5-of-9 shooting.
