Men's Basketball Drops Back-and-Forth Battle with West Virginia

The Utah men’s basketball dropped a tight 71-69 game against West Virginia in its home finale.
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team dropped a tight decision to West Virginia, 71-69, Tuesday night inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center in its home finale.
Gabe Madsen started the game hot, knocking down his first four shots of the game – three of which were from downtown for an early 11 points before the midway point of the half to give Utah the 16-7 edge. The Utes would go on a 7:26 minute drought without a field-goal before Lawson Lovering threw down a two-handed jam at the 5:34 mark. That drought allowed West Virginia to cut the lead down to 21-17 after Lovering's jam.
Utah (16-14, 8-11 Big 12) would hold on to a narrow lead as the half winded down, but a quick 6-0 spurt from the Mountaineers saw them send the Utes into the locker room down 30-29.
The Runnin' Utes got out of the gates early in the second stanza, jumping out to a 44-36 lead 6 minutes into the frame. However, West Virginia would slowly chip away at the lead and take the 51-50 lead behind a Jonathan Powell 3-pointer with 7:36 left to go. WVU's persistence coupled with a shooting slump for Utah where it only managed to connect on 2-of-11 field-goal attempts.
The game would be tied four more times before WVU's Javon Small gave the visiting team a 61-58 lead that they never relinquished. However, Utah continued to battle and made it a 70-69 affair after a 3-pointer from Madsen and steal from Jake Wahlin made it a one-point game. But, there just wasn't enough time left in the game that led to Utah falling to the Mountaineers (18-12, 9-10 Big 12).
Madsen finished with a game-high 23 points behind 5 triples, five rebounds and 2 assists. Mike Sharavjamts chipped in with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists of his own while Ezra Ausar added 11 points and 5 rebounds – including a 9-for-11 night at the line.
