ALEX JENSEN NAMED HEAD COACH OF UTAH BASKETBALL
University of Utah Director of Athletics
Mark Harlan named former Runnin' Ute legend and Utah Athletics Hall of Famer Alex Jensen the 17th head coach in Utah basketball history on Thursday, March 6. Jensen, a Centerville, Utah, native returns home to his alma mater on the Hill after 13-plus years in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz (2013-23) and most recently the Dallas Mavericks (2023-25).
Jensen was key player in Utah's 1998 run to the NCAA Championship title game in San Antonio and finished his career at Utah 109-24 overall and 51-9 in conference play. The local product helped the Runnin' Utes to four-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances while claiming four-straight regular-season championships and two conference tournament championships.
He ranks No. 26 on the all-time scoring list at Utah, closing out his career with 1,279 points in 133 games played and shot 53.2-percent from the field – including a .413 shooting clip from long range. Jensen still ranks on the top-10 in several categories on the all-time list, sitting in second in offensive rebounds (329), tied for fourth in games played (133), fifth in NCAA Tournament games played (12), sixth in defensive rebounds (567), seventh in total rebounds (896) and seventh in 3-point field-goal percentage (.413).
