PROVO, Utah – Despite its fight down the stretch, the Utah men's basketball team fell to #23/22 BYU Saturday night inside the Marriott Center, 85-74, to close out the regular-season.
With the loss, Utah heads into its first Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships as the No. 11-seed and will battle No. 14-seed UCF on Tuesday, March 11, starting at 7:30 p.m. (MST) / 8:30 p.m. (CST) local on
ESPN+ with Roxy Bernstein and King McClure.
Each team took turns with short runs to exchange leads early on, which saw Utah trail 12-7 out of the 11:38 media break. That would continue as the game headed into the 7:52 media timeout with Utah on top this time around 16-12 thanks to a 9-0 run facilitated by 6 second-chance points from five offensive boards.
The home team tied things up, 21-21, to force a Utah (16-15, 8-12 Big 12) timeout with 4:35 left in the frame before
Jake Wahlin would rattle in a 3-pointer to put Utah ahead at the 3:45 media break. However, the Cougars closed out the remaining 2:48 of game clock on a 13-3 run thanks to 3-of-5 from 3-point range to send Utah into the locker down 34-30.
Utah managed to keep it a two-possession game despite turning the ball over 10 times in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Ezra Ausar kept the Runnin' Utes offense afloat, pulling down 4 offensive boards to help Utah hold an 11-4 edge in second-chance pants. The junior headed into halftime with 10 points and 7 rebounds – 4 of which were om the offensive glass.
The second frame started with some back-and-forth before BYU extended its lead to double-digits, 44-34, and pushed it as a high as 54-41. However,
Gabe Madsen got the Utes back within striking distance after drilling a pair of 3-pointers followed by a breakaway for
Miro Little to bring Utah within 54-49 with 11:47 left in the game.
BYU (23-8, 14-6 Big 12) pushed its lead back up to 63-49 behind a 9-0 run that was aided by Utah going 0-for-9 from the field during that stretch and forced the Utes to call a timeout with 7:34 left to play. The Runnin' Utes would cut the lead down to 10 points several times down the stretch, but wasn't able to string together enough stops before falling 85-74 to the Cougars.
Little finished with a career-high 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from deep and was at one point 6-for-6 from 3-point range. Ausar finished with his eighth-career double-double and second a as Ute totaling 12 points and 12 boards – 8 of which came from the offensive glass.
