SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's basketball team closed out the Big 12 regular season with an 81-67 win over Arizona on Saturday night.
Utah is now 19-11 overall on the season and 10-8 in Big 12 play. The Utes were led by senior Lani White's 19 points. Reese Ross contributed 16 points and six rebounds. Maty Wilke added 12 points to Utah's offensive efforts.
GAME SUMMARY Utah started the game off strong going on a 15-2 run led by seven points from Reese Ross. The Utes stayed in control of the momentum and finished out the quarter with a 29-16 lead.
In the second quarter Arizona began fighting back and held Utah to a two minute scoring drought and closed the lead to 32-27. Utah responded with a 10-2 run propelling the Utes to a 47-34 lead going into halftime.
The Utes hit two quick threes from seniors Lani White and Maty Wilke that helped fuel an 8-0 run to start the second half. Both teams continued to exchange baskets for the remainder of the quarter and the Utes were able to extend their lead to 71-47 with one quarter left to play.
In the fourth quarter Arizona began to fight back and held Utah to over a two minute scoring drought while going on a 6-0 run. The Wildcats kept putting pressure and extended the run to 16-3 while holding Utah to another two minute scoring drought. Utah remained steady and closed out the last Big 12 home game with an 81-67 win.
LEADERS Utah had four Utes score in double figures and were led by senior Lani White's 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Reese Ross contributed 16 points going 6-of-9 from the field while Maty Wilke finished with 12 points and LA Sneed added 11.
Reese Ross and Chyra Evans each grabbed six rebounds. Evans also posted nine points and three assists for the Utes. LA Sneed led the Utes with five assists.
COMPARISON Utah shot 53.8% from the field while Arizona shot 44.8%. Utah went 44.0% from three knocking down 11-of-25 while Arizona shot 43.9% going 6-of-14. At the free-throw line, Utah shot 82.4% going 14-of-17 while Arizona also shot 81.8% converting 9-of-11.
Utah had 23 assists on 28 made field goals while Arizona had 17 assists on 26 made field goals. The Utes won the rebounding battle as the Utes pulled down 33 to the Wildcats' 27.
UP NEXT Utah will head to Kansas City for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Tournament. The Big 12 will announce seeding and game times and matchups tomorrow evening.
