SALT LAKE CITY – Despite strong fourth quarter efforts Utah drops to rival BYU 86-74 on Saturday afternoon.
Utah is now 17-11 overall on the season and 8-8 in Big 12 play. The Utes were led by senior Lani White's 20 points. Reese Ross contributed 11 points and game-high nine rebounds and Grace Foster added 10 points.
GAME SUMMARY The Cougars started the game hitting a 3-pointer to put them on the board first. However, the Utes fought back going on an 8-2 run with five of those points from Reese Ross. Lani White then knocked down a corner 3-pointer to give the Utes a 10-7 edge. Both teams exchanged baskets for the rest of the quarter but BYU squeezed past to take the 19-16 lead at the quarter break.
In the second quarter, BYU took over momentum and pushed for a 10-0 run while holding Utah to a four minute scoring drought. Despite Utah's late defensive efforts BYU was able to hold onto a lead 36-29 going into the halftime break.
Out of the halftime break BYU continued pushing with momentum scoring nine unanswered points.The Cougars went on to control momentum maintaining a 56-41 lead going into the final quarter of play.
In the early part of the fourth quarter Utah took control of the momentum going on a 7-0 run that brought the score within nine points. Utah never gave up and battled until the final buzzer but the damage had been done and the Cougars claimed the 86-74 victory over the Utes.
LEADERS Utah had three Utes score in double figures and was led by senior Lani White's 20 points. Reese Ross contributed 11 points and Grace Foster added 10.
Ross led the Utes with seven rebounds while adding three assists. Chyra Evans also added three assists.
COMPARISON Utah shot 33.3% from the field while BYU shot 53.7%. Utah went 28.6% from three knocking down 8-of-28 while BYU shot 45.8% going 11-of-24. At the free-throw line, Utah shot 87.5% going 28-of-32 while BYU shot 70.8% converting 17-of-24.
Utah had 13 assists on 19 made field goals while BYU had 13 assists on 29 made field goals. The Utes outrebounded the Cougars 34-33.
UP NEXT The Utes will embark on their final road trip of the regular season to take on the Buffs of Colorado on Tuesday, Feb. 24th. Utah will then return to the Huntsman Center for their final home game of the 2025-26 regular season against Arizona at 5 p.m.
