OTTAWA – University of Utah baseball alumnus Micah Ashman, who pitched with the Utes from 2022-24, has been named to Team Canada for the 2026 World Baseball Classic as Baseball Canada unveiled its 21-player roster on Thursday night.
Canada will compete in Pool A, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with games scheduled against Colombia (March 7), Panama (March 8), Puerto Rico (March 10), and Cuba (March 11). The top two teams in Pool A will advance to the quarterfinal round in Houston, Texas.
Prior to the tournament, Canada will hold a training camp beginning March 2 in Dunedin, Florida, at the Toronto Blue Jays' Player Development Complex. The camp will include exhibition games against the Toronto Blue Jays on March 3 and the Philadelphia Phillies on March 4.
A three-year Utah Ute and two-time Pac-12 All-Conference selection, Ashman made 72 career appearances, including a program-record 20 saves. The southpaw had four wins and a 3.36 ERA with the Utes. His junior year in 2024 saw Ashman record 11 saves—the second-most by a Utah player all-time in a single season. It also ranked second in the Pac-12 and sixth nationally.
Ashman walked only three batters during in 26.1 innings on the bump in 2024, holding opposing batters to a .240 batting average. He was included on the preseason and midseason watch lists for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, and was ranked by D1Baseball.com as the No. 18 relief pitcher nationally in that site's late-season position rankings.
He is currently in the Baltimore Orioles' minor league system and approaching his third professional season. Ashman was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 11
th round of the 2024 MLB Draft and finished the 2025 season with the Chesapeake Baysox, the Orioles' Double-A affiliate. Ashman has a 5-4 record and six saves in 48 professional appearances, tallying a 2.54 ERA.
He came to the U after playing scholastically for Chad Fife at Jordan High School. Ashman helped his team to a state championship as a freshman and also played basketball while in high school.
Canada will be led in the WBC by manager Ernie Whitt, who will lead the team on the WBC stage for the sixth time.
