SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team battled through the night but ultimately fell in extra innings as Arizona pulled away for a late 8-6 victory on Friday evening at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.

Utah's offense was steady throughout the night, recording nine hits with six different players collecting at least one. Cal Miller and Jet Gilliam each led the way with two hits, while Miller added an RBI and a run scored. Luke Jacobs gave the Utes the early lead with a first-inning home run, while Cameron Gurney drove in a run and scored once in the game.

On the mound, Colter McAnelly delivered a strong start for Utah, playing seven innings while allowing just two runs on one hit and striking out six. McAnelly kept Arizona back for most of the evening before the Wildcats produced a late comeback.

Utah struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Luke Jacobs hit a 398-foot solo home run to left-center field, giving the Utes an early 1-0 advantage.

The Utes extended the lead in the fourth inning as Daniel Arambula came up to score on a Cameron Gurney RBI single to right-center, extending the Utes to a 2-0 lead.

Arizona answered in the sixth inning with a solo homerun from Carson McEntire to cut the lead in half, but Utah responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning with a big offensive run.

Utah plated four runs in the sixth inning to take control of the game. Jake Long scored on a passed ball before Cal Miller followed with an RBI single to the right side to score Gurney. Later in the inning, Matt Flaharty reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Miller to score and Gilliam was able to steal home to extend the Utes lead to 6-1.

Arizona started to slowly chip away, plating a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning before putting together a four-run rally in the ninth inning. The rally was sparked by Wildcats' Caleb Danzeisen delivering a three-run homer to right-center field to tie the game up at 6-6.

The Wildcats carried that momentum into extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Arizona capitalized on a wild pitch that allowed Maddox Mihalakis to score before Carson McEntire lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Beau Sylvester, giving the Wildcats their first lead of the night at 8-6.

Utah threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but Arizona reliever Garrett Hicks closed the door to secure the win. Hicks tossed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing no hits while striking out three.

Despite the loss, McAnelly's strong start highlighted the night for Utah as the right-hander kept the Wildcats quiet through the first seven innings and allowed just one hit while striking out six.
Utah finished the night with nine hits while Arizona scored eight runs on six hits in the comeback victory.

Utah will face Arizona on Saturday in the second game of this three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT inside America First Ballpark.
