Utes back on the pitch with Aug. 12 home opener in mind
"We're incredibly excited to get this season underway," said Nakada. "Our returning players put in a tremendous amount of work throughout the spring and I'm looking forward to seeing that growth translate onto the field this fall. We've also added an exciting group of newcomers through both our freshman class and the transfer portal. Our transfers bring valuable experience at the collegiate level, while this freshman class has the talent and mentality to compete for playing time right away."
Nakada is preparing for his sixth season guiding the Utah soccer program and he'll be leading a squad full of new faces. The 2026 club includes 18 first-year Utes, the most newcomers the program has ever had since at least before 2003. The team did bring back 10 returners from a 2025 squad that put together a 5-3-1 non-conference record, a mark that included road wins over Gonzaga and Washington."One of the things I'm most excited about with this year's schedule is the opportunity to play every program in the state of Utah," said Nakada. "I don't believe that's happened before and in-state matchups always create a special atmosphere for our players, our fans, and the soccer community across the state. Those games are always highly competitive and something everyone looks forward to.
"As always, the Big 12 will present an incredible challenge. Our conference had an outstanding year nationally last season and I expect the level of competition to be just as high again this fall. Every match will demand our very best, but that's exactly the type of environment we want to compete in. We're excited about the group we've assembled and the opportunity to continue building our program this season."
