Utes ready to turn attention to non-conference play
EUGENE, Ore. – Utah Volleyball had another good showing in their final exhibition against the No. 25 Oregon Ducks according to head coach Alyssa D'Errico.
While stats were not kept, the Utes continued the pace of play they displayed against Weber State as they added a few wrinkles to the mix from the week before.
"I thought today was a great showing from our team," D'Errico said. "We had a lot of people contribute and a lot of system things that we've been trying to work on showed up. I thought we were really good with service pressure from the end-line, and really good on the block and defensive side of the ball because of the service pressure. Our setters distributed the ball well again and we were close to 48-percent kill through the first three sets as a team."
D'Errico noted the Utes displayed the improvements they were hoping to see from the previous week against the Ducks without losing a step in the areas they were already excelling in.
"I thought there was a lot of good offensive decisions from our attackers," D'Errico said. "I thought we did a much better job of playing high and playing physical—not pulling balls down. We played with good range as attackers, and I thought we saw the same thing we saw against Weber with our service pressure and ball control as a passing unit against Oregon's really good serving team. We stayed where we were in a lot of places versus Weber, but improved significantly terms of our attacking, decision-making, and physicality at the net on the offensive side of the ball."
The whole team earned praise from D'Errico for going out and doing their jobs with an extra shout out for opposite hitter Loryn Helgesen and setters Isabelle Marco and Isabella Mogridge.
"I though Loryn did a really good job offensively for us," D'Errico said. "I thought both of our setters did a good job distributing the ball, and like I said, our offense—offensive efficiency as a team was really, really good. As a whole team, I really felt like we did a great job with service pressure from the in-line throughout the entire match."
Up next, Utah Volleyball opens its non-conference schedule at the Utah Valley Tournament Aug. 28-29 before heading home to the Huntsman Center on Aug. 30 to host the Oregon State Beavers.
