A SAM is a student-athlete who serves as a friend and helper to fellow student-athletes. The role of a SAM is to listen, support, provide information and demonstrate a "caring feeling" to teammates and others experiencing the challenges of college life. The purpose of a SAM is to promote positive lifestyles among student-athletes through mentoring and education. All members go through training that is provided by counselors in the Alcohol and Drug Education Center, co-sponsors of the group. At the end of the year, members also participate in a weekend retreat in order to establish goals for the following year.
Who Can Be A Member?
When Does SAMs Meet?
SAMs meets twice each month during the nine-month academic year. The representatives meet on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. in either the Burbidge Academic Center or the University of Utah Counseling Center. Attendance is mandatory, since student-athletes receive one semester credit for participating in the program and mentoring in the freshman Life Skills class.
Are There Any Other Responsibilities?
Besides serving as a mentor for other student-athletes, you will be responsible to help with the Student-Athlete Conference and mentor in the freshmen Life Skills class.
