Berens begins his second season as the director of operations for the Utah cross country and track & field teams in July of 2022.
He comes to Salt Lake City after recently being appointed the race director for Brooksee, where he led the execution of all race production operations and functions directly related to the event management of the Mesa Marathon, Portland Marathon and Revel Racing Series.
Prior to joining Brooksee, Berens served as the head track & field coach and assistant cross country coach at Summit Academy High School in Bluffdale, Utah, this past season (2021-22).
Before moving out west to the Beehive State, Berens was a graduate assistant at Wichita State where he served as an assistant director of operations. While with the Shockers, he aided in all aspects of the job with the director operations – including the preparation, organization and logistics of hosting the 2019 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships.
A native of Lincoln, Neb., Berens was a 2017 NCAA National Championship qualifying team member, an all-region recipient, a five-time all-conference honoree and an eight-time letter winner with the cross country and track & field teams at Nebraska Wesleyan.
He prepped at Lincoln Pius X High School where he was a three-time letter winner in track & field and competed in two Nebraska State Cross Country Championships, placing 48th his senior year and 69th his sophomore year. He also ran on the 2013 state championship 4x800m relay team his junior year while also winning all-class gold in the 4x800m race.
Berens earned his bachelor’s degree in 2018 at Nebraska Wesleyan in sport management with a minor in business administration and received his master’s of education in sport management from Wichita State in December of 2019.
