Chance Cain enters his fifth season as the assistant coach for the Utah men’s golf program in 2020-21 after previously working as a volunteer assistant coach at Texas Tech.
Utah’s 2019-20 season was shortened by the Coronavirus pandemic, but that didn’t stop the Utes from putting together multiple strong performances as a team, including setting a school record.
In just the second tournament of the fall, the Utes shattered the school record for lowest 54-hole team score at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, shooting 825 (15-under) as a group. The previous record of 840 took place at the Cowboy Classic in April of 2008.
As individuals, Utah’s top-four golfers all earned spots in the Utah record books for single-season lowest scoring average, led by seniors Mitchell Schow and Jordan Costello. Schow is tied for fourth in program history after shooting a 71.6 in 2019-20 with Costello ranking seventh (71.8).
The Utes have had some of their best seasons in recent history. Utah's win at the 2017 Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational was the team's first event win since 2009. The Utes have won three tournaments with Cain on staff. Utah has continuously improved at the Pac-12 Championships over the past four years, finishing tied for fifth in 2019 for its best finish since joining the league.
In 2019, Utah had a golfer return to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2006 with Kyler Dunkle finishing tied for 28th for the highest NCAA finish for a Utah golfer in modern history. Dunkle won a school-record three tournaments in his career, Utah's first individual event titles since 2006, earned Utah's first All-Pac-12 honors and tied the school record for scoring average (71.2, 2019). Utah has had an NCAA Regional qualifier the past two seasons with Blake Tomlinson competing in 2018, who was Utah's first qualifier since 2007.
Over two seasons at Texas Tech, Cain assisted in weekly practices and tournament qualifying, while also coaching players through their rounds at different events. He was a part of the 2013 Red Raider squad that went on to compete at the NCAA Division I Tournament where they finished in 14th-place overall – the program's third-best finish in school history. The following season, Texas Tech finished second at the 2014 Big 12 Championship Tournament.
Cain, a native of Big Spring, Texas, played at Midland College from 2006-08 and was part of the 2008 NJCAA National Championship team. Cain then went on to earn his bachelor's degree in general business at Texas Tech and later earned his master's degree in sports management.
Cain is the son of Tim and Mary Cain. He has one sister, Bridget Triepke. He currently resides in Salt Lake City.
