Dan Corotan enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for Utah volleyball in 2021.
In the spring of 2021 after the fall season had been delayed, Corotan helped Utah make a trip to its fifth-straight NCAA Tournament. The Utes ranked as high as No. 7 after starting 8-0 in Pac-12 play to get the spring season going.
Utah finished the year third in the conference (13-4) before its Round of 32 exit at the NCAA Championships. Corotan saw standout Dani Drews earn the program’s first ever Pac-12 Player of the Year selection and first ever back-to-back Pacific South region Player of the Year honor. Additionally, Drews became the only player in program history to become a two-time first team All-American.
Â
His second season in Salt Lake City turned out to be one of the most successful in program history as the team went to its fourth Sweet 16 in program history behind a program high AVCA All-Americans. The team earned their highest ranking ever at No. 9 in 2019 before the 2021 squad improved that mark this past season.
Â
The Utes were led by two-time All-American and AVCA West Region Player of the Year Dani Drews. She set a single-season record in kills with 643, which was the second most in the country. Along with Drews setting the single-season kills record, setter Saige Ka’aha’aina-Torres broke the single-season assists record and libero Brianna Doehrmann set the career program record for digs.
Â
The team totaled 24 wins and finished third in the Pac-12 with 14 wins. The third-place finish and 14 wins are the highest since joining the league in 2011.
Â
In his first season, he helped guide Utah to the second round of the NCAA tournament along with two-student-athletes being named AVCA All-Americans.
Â
Drews and Koerber, both sophomore outside hitters, got better as the season went along under Corotan’s tutelage. Drews was honored by being named an AVCA Second Team All-American after totaling 522 kills and rarely coming off the court for Utah. Koerber locked down the right side finishing the season with 264 kills and 108 blocks. She earned All-American Honorable Mention honors for her season.
Â
Along with these two sophomores, Corotan was instrumental in helping a young team to start the season improve as the year went on and close the regular season winning five of the last six games and making it to the NCAA Tournament’s second round.
Â
Corotan made the move to Salt Lake City following a three-year stint at nearby Utah Valley, where he helped guide the Wolverines to a 45-44 overall record and 28-14 mark in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play. He was instrumental in UVU's taking second place in the WAC in 2016, which was the program's highest league-finish in school history.
Â
In his first season with the Wolverines, Corotan coached UVU's first-ever WAC Freshman of the Year in Abby Jensen and then just a few seasons later helped guide Madison Dennison to 1.65 blocks per set, which ranked No. 2 overall in the nation. The Wolverines finished this past season ranked No. 8 in the nation in blocking, averaging 2.98 blocks per set. UVU ranked No. 7 in the nation in 2016 with 2.96 blocks per set.
Â
In his time with UVU, Corotan was also responsible for creating recruiting content, plans and strategies. He managed film sessions on both an individual and team basis, while also breaking down statistical analysis on a daily basis. Prior to his being named assistant coach in 2015, Corotan served as the team's video and stats coordinator.
Â
Corotan also has coaching experience at the club level having coached various boys and girls teams at the club level around Utah. He also coached a variety of camps and clinics, including Avid Volleyball and Global Medal Squared camps.
Â
Corotan, who graduated from BYU in 2014 with a degree in Korean, hails from Los Alamitos, California, where he was a standout volleyball player at Los Alamitos High School. During his playing days, Corotan was named third-team All-Sunset League after leading his team to the Sunset League title. He also played for LBC at the club level, where he helped his squad take second at nationals en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Corotan also gained experience in the sport playing at the beach volleyball level for several years.
