SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah senior forward Hanno Mottola, a preseason candidate for the Wooden and Naismith awards, may miss up to six weeks of the 1999-2000 season due to a medial collateral tear in his left knee.
Mottola was examined by Ute team physician Dr. Patrick Greis and underwent an MRI on Wednesday. The injury was first believed to be a medial sprain. Dr. Greis reviewed the MRI again on Thursday morning and detected a tear in the medial collateral ligament, which will likely delay Mottola's return to the court even further. He sustained the injury after taking a charge with 5:30 left to play in Tuesday's exhibition game against the California All-Stars at the Huntsman Center.
Mottola, a native of Helsinki, Finland, was named first team all-conference last season for the Runnin' Utes, averaging 15.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
Utah opens the regular season against Arkansas State in the Preseason NIT next Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
