SALT LAKE CITY - Stony Brook faces one of the many difficult games on its inaugural Division I schedule Monday when it travels to No. 19 Utah.
The Seawolves (0-4), making their initial appearance in Division I this season after spending the last 35 years in Division III, are coming off a 68-53 loss to Hofstra on Saturday, despite 17 points from Steve Pratta.
Even though the losses are piling up quickly, coach Nick Macarchuk said the bottom line this season is for his team to gain experience and eventually be invited to join a league which rewards its champion with an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
"I believe it is important that although we face many challenges this season, it is essential that we enjoy this historical year," Macarchuk said. "There is much to look forward to for Stony Brook basketball and we must concentrate on getting better as players, coaches and a program as a whole."
Stony Brook lost all seven games it played against Division I foes last year and has already lost to St. John's, 84-43, this season. The Seawolves still have to play, among others, the College of Charleston, Seton Hall and Auburn after Utah (1-1).
Coach Rick Majerus and the Utes are coming off a 56-48 loss to Kentucky in the Preseason NIT quarterfinals. It was Utah's fifth straight elimination loss to Kentucky this decade, following NCAA tournament losses to the Wildcats in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998. The last of those was in the national title game.
"The tempo favored us," Majerus said of the teams' latest meeting. "We ground it out and wanted to be there at the end to win the game - and we lost. We had some turnovers where we tried to make some plays, and those were inexperienced turnovers. We met the enemy and the enemy was us on five of the turnovers. We had spacing difficulties, alignment difficulties and we had Kentucky difficulties."
Jeremy Killion scored 15 points for Utah, including 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range, while Alex Jensen had nine rebounds.
