SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team won the last game of a three game series on Sunday afternoon against the visiting Fresno State Bulldogs, 4-2. Fresno ended up winning the series, having bested the Utes in the first two games. The win improves Utah's record to 19-28 overall, and 7-18 in conference play, while Fresno State's record falls to 32-28, and 13-14 in the WAC.
Sunday's contest was a drastic change from the hitting exhibitions that took place during games one and two. The low scoring affair was dominated by the starting pitchers as Fresno State's Shawn Hannah struck out eleven Ute batters in six and two thirds innings. Lance Ericksen was stellar for Utah, pitching a complete game, and allowing only seven base hits. Ericksen pitched his way out of jams all afternoon, forcing the Bulldogs into two double plays and stranding eight runners on base.
The Bulldog's held a 2-0 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Ute bats finally heated up. Ryan Johnerson singled, to bring Jamie Hardy, the tying run to the plate, who promptly slammed a 430' home run off of the screen in dead center field. The go ahead run was also scored in the Utah seventh, as pinch hitter Jake Shortino lined a single into left field to drive in Mike Wood from second.
The Utes have two games remaining at home this season, in a double header against Southern Utah that will be played on May 11. The first pitch is at noon, at Franklin Covey Field.
