SALT LAKE CITY - In its first home game of the season, the Utah baseball team lost to Rice 12-1. The defeat evens Utah's season record to 12-12 (0-4 WAC) while Rice improves to 23-5 (6-1 WAC).
The Rice Owls established their lead in the first inning when all-American shortstop Damon Thames cracked a home run to score three runs. The Utes scored their lone run in the first when senior Ryan Hilts singled and was brought home on a double by Eric Wallace.
Rice kept Utah in check while scoring nine more runs to put the game away.
The series continues Sat., March 20 at 1:00 p.m., at Franklin Covey Field.
