Ute Play
The Utah baseball team hosts Brigham Young and Fresno State, May 5-9.
The Utes take on the Cougars in a twilight-double header on Wednesday
at 5:00 p.m.. It concludes the three-game non-conference series
between the two teams. On Friday, the Utes play the Bulldogs at 7:00
p.m. Saturday and Sunday's games are both scheduled for 1:00 p.m. All
games will be held at Franklin Covey Field.
Utes to Watch
Senior Eric Wallace leads the team with 16 doubles and is tied with
Ryan Johnerson for first with 12 home runs. Wallace was a .342
batting average and 27 RBI. He was named Western Athletic Conference
Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 21-27. In his latest series
with Hawaii, Wallace had a .615 three-game batting average hitting
eight of 13 including four doubles.
Scouting the Opposition
Brigham Young is 21-29 with an 8-15 Western Athletic Conference
record. In their first game this season, the Cougars defeated the
Utes 9-2. Fresno State is 30-27 with an 11-13 WAC mark. The Bulldogs
have won three of their last four games, going 2-1 against BYU. Last
season, Utah was 0-3 against FSU.

Recent Results
Utah was 0-3 last weekend against Hawaii (13-8, 6-5, 12-11). The Utes
drop to 18-25 with a 6-16 Western Athletic Conference mark. In the
first game, the Utes had eight runs on 13 hits with two errors. Eric
Wallace, Ryan Johnerson and Rob Stuart each slammed doubles and Adam
Castleton, Jed Chrisman, Johnerson and Mike Goff each pounded home
runs. Despite the heavy cracking of bats, the Utes were defeated
13-8. Brandon Page (6-4) picked up the loss for the Utes. In six
innings, he delivered three strikeouts and yielded 12 hits. In the
second game, Utah had five runs on 10 hits with five errors. Wallace
hit his third double of the series and Jamie Hardy and Goff each
homered. Brett McDermaid pitched six innings striking out two batters
while giving up nine hits. The senior is 2-5. Hawaii started off the
final game with five runs in the first inning. Utah scored two in the
bottom of the first on a single by Ryan Hilts and back-to-back
doubles by Castleton and Wallace. Utah dominated the third inning
scoring seven runs on eight hits. It was a double base frenzy as
Wallace, Jared Larsen and Jake Shortino each smashed one while Hilts
doubled twice. The inning was rounded off with a two-run homer by
Stuart. Utah added another run in the fourth when Hardy tripled and
was scored on a single by Larsen. Hawaii scored four in the fifth but
the Utes answered back with one run in the bottom the fifth for an
11-9 lead. The Utes were unable to hold onto the lead however giving
up three runs in the ninth for a 12-11 loss. Brandon Ballard (1-3)
took the loss for the Utes. The sophomore pitched one inning. Senior
starter Lance Ericksen pitched four and two-thirds innings, striking
out two batters.
Wallace led the Utah hitting brigade with a .615 weekend batting average. The senior had eight hits including four doubles. He scored four runs and two RBI.
Johnerson was six of 13 for a .416 weekend average. The first baseman had six hits including one double and one home run. He scored four runs, one RBI and had one stolen base.
Castleton was .333 with five hits. The freshman had two doubles and a home run. He scored two runs and four RBI.
