Utah vs. BYU
The Utah baseball team (18-22, 6-13 WAC) hosts Brigham Young, Tues.,
April 27 at 7:00 p.m. It is the second game in a three-game
non-conference series between the two teams. In the first, BYU
defeated the Utes 9-2. The game will be played at Franklin Covey
Field.
Utes to Watch
Senior Eric Wallace leads the Utes with 12 home runs and is ranked
fourth in the Western Athletic Conference. He is fifth in the WAC
with a .712 slugging percentage and is seventh in doubles. The left
fielder has a .316 batting average, is second on the team with 12
doubles and is tied for third on the team with 25 RBI.
Ryan Johnerson is second for the Utes and fifth in the WAC with 11 home runs. The senior leads the Utes with a .338 batting average, 4 triples, 54 hits and 33 RBI. He is second with 13 stolen bases. In other WAC rankings, Johnerson is fifth in triples, tied for seventh in stolen bases and eighth in runs per game with a 1.11 average.
Senior Ryan Hilts leads the team with 14 stolen bases. He has a .306 batting average and is second for the Utes with 52 hits and seven doubles. He is ranked sixth in the WAC in stolen bases.
Junior Mike Goff leads the Utes with 13 doubles. The third baseman has a .277 batting average. He is ninth in the WAC in doubles per game with a .37 average.
Brandon Page leads the Ute pitching staff with a 4.52. ERA and a 6-3 record. He is second on the team with 56 strikeouts. His ERA ranks him 12th in the WAC.
Lance Ericksen leads the team with 59 strikeouts, 65 innings pitched and three complete games. He has a 5.53 ERA and is 3-4. The senior ranks fourth in the WAC in complete games and fourth in innings pitched.
Overall, the Utes are fifth in WAC rankings with a .958 fielding percentage. They are sixth in pitching with a 6.42 ERA and are 10th in batting with a .279 average.
Later this week...
The Utes host Hawai'i in a three-game WAC series. The Utes play the
Rainbow Wahine April 29-May 1. The first game is scheduled Thursday
at 7:00 p.m. Friday's game begins at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday's game
starts at 12:00 p.m. All three games will be played at Franklin Covey
Field.
Scouting Brigham Young
The Cougars are 20-27 with a 7-13 Western Athletic Conference mark.
Brigham Young lost its last three WAC games to San Diego State. In
non-conference play, BYU won three of their last seven games,
defeating Western Illinois (7-5) and Southern Utah (9-8). The Cougars
dropped two games to Oklahoma State (20-15, 6-4) and SUU (10-8,
15-13).
Last Week
The Utes dropped three games to San Jose State (12-6, 4-3, 8-2) last
weekend in San Jose, Calif. In the first game, Utah had six runs on
seven hits with two errors. Freshman Donald Hawes homered and Nate
Weese, Ryan Johnerson, Jamie Hardy and Jake Shortino each slammed
doubles. Brandon Page (6-3) picks up the loss. The junior pitched
five innings in the 12-6 loss.
In the second game, the Utes took the Spartans 10 innings giving up the winning run in the bottom of the 10th for the 4-3 loss. Utah had three runs on eight hits with one error. Senior Ryan Hilts was 2-4 with one RBI. Eric Wallace was 1-4 hitting his 12th home run of the season and sophomore Jed Chrisman was 1-4 hitting a double. Brett McDermaid pitched eight innings for the Utes. Brandon Ballard (1-2) picks up the loss however pitching the last two innings.
In the final game, Utah had two runs on eight hits with one error. Utah's runs were scored on a two-run homer by Mike Wood, his third of the season. Lance Ericksen (3-4) pitched five innings striking out two batters.
