Ute Play
The Utah baseball team hosts New Mexico in a three-game series March
26-28. The games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00
p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. All games will be played at Franklin Covey
Field.
Utah is 13-13 with a 1-5 WAC mark. In their last series in 1996, the Utes defeated the Lobos 2-1 (4-5, 10-9, 8-5). New Mexico is 11-18 and 2-7 in WAC play.
Utes to Watch
Ryan Johnerson has seven home runs. The senior has a .337 batting
average consisting of 35 hits, seven doubles, two triples and 23 RBI. He
also leads the team in stolen bases with 10 of 10 attempted. At first
base, he has a .996 (233 putouts, 18 assists and 1 error) fielding
average. In WAC rankings, Johnerson is third in home runs, fifth in
stolen bases, 10th in runs scored and 19th in overall batting.
Senior Eric Wallace leads the Ute home run race with nine. The left fielder has a .307 batting average including 17 hits, five doubles and 17 RBI. He is 3-4 in stolen bases and is second in the WAC in home runs.
Jed Chrisman leads the team with a .379 batting average (17 games). The sophomore has 22 hits, three doubles, two triples, two home runs and 12 RBI. He is tenth in the WAC in triples.
Utility player Ryan Hilts is second on the team and sixth in the WAC in stolen bases with 10 of 12 attempted. The senior has a .257 batting average and is tied for first with 28 hits. He has four doubles, one triple, one home run and nine RBI.
Adam Castleton is fourth on the team with a .304 batting average. The second baseman is tied for first with 28 hits. He has eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 17 RBI.
Brandon Page leads the Ute pitching squad with a 3.89 ERA. The junior is 3-1 playing 44 innings in nine appearances. He has 35 strikeouts and has only yielded 49 hits. His ERA places him ninth in WAC rankings.
Senior Lance Ericksen is 3-3 with a 5.56 ERA. He has played 55 innings in eight appearances and leads the team with 42 strikeouts. He is second in the WAC in complete games (2), and sixth in innings pitched.
Recent Results
The Utah baseball team was 1-2 in a three-game series with nationally
ranked Rice University. The Utes dropped the first game 12-1, won the
second 9-8 and lost the third 5-2.
In the first game, the Rice Owls established their lead in the first inning when all-American shortstop Damon Thames cracked a home run to score three runs.
The Utes scored their solo run in the first when Hilts singled and was brought in on a double by Wallace. Rice kept Utah at one while scoring eight more runs to win the game. Utah had one run on seven hits with three errors.
In the second game, Rice jumped to an early 4-1 lead in the third inning. Utah came back to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth when the Utes scored three runs on two hits. It see-sawed back and forth as both teams scored two runs in the fifth inning. Rice regained the lead in the seventh with a two-run home run by Thames. Utah tied the score in the eighth. The score remained tied until the bottom of the tenth when Jared Larsen hit a single driving in Wallace for the 9-8 victory.
In the final game, Rice established a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. The Utes answered back scoring one run in the fourth when Castleton stroked a triple and was brought in on a single by Larsen. Rice scored three runs in the fifth. Although the Utes stopped the Rice Owl batting brigade they were only able to score one run in the sixth giving up a 5-2 game.
