Tempe, Ariz. - The University of Utah opened the 1999 NCAA baseball season with a three games series versus nationally ranked Arizona State. The Utes were 0-3 in the series, being defeated 17-4 Friday, 3-0 Saturday and 9-2 Sunday.
On Friday, first baseman Ryan Johnerson logged two stolen bases. The Utes had four runs on eight hits with four errors. On Saturday, junior Brandon Page rotated in as Utah's finishing pitcher facing 11 batters. The right-handed hurler allowed only one hit and delivered four strikeouts. The Utes had no runs on four hits and two errors.
In the final game, shortstop Rob Stuart scored for the Utes on a double to left field. Senior second baseman Ryan Hilts singled to centerfield to bring the freshman in. In the sixth inning, Johnerson hit a home run to score the Utes second run. Utah had two runs on five hits with four errors.
Next up, the Utes travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to take-on New Mexico State Jan. 29-31.
