Ute Travel
The Utah baseball team (18-19, 7-10 WAC) travels to San Jose, Calif.,
April 23-25 to play a three-game Western Athletic Conference series
with San Jose State. Friday's game will begin at 7:00 p.m. (PDT)
Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (PDT). All
games will be played at Municipal Stadium.
WAC Player of the Week
Utah pitcher Brandon Ballard was named Western Athletic Conference
Player of the Week, for the week of April 12-18. The sophomore earned
a win and a save in two scoreless relief appearances against UNLV.
Last Thursday, he pitched the last two innings of Utah's 4-3 victory
giving up two hits. Last Saturday, he pitched the final inning in
Utah's 9-8 win, allowing just one hit. Ballard has a 4.11 ERA with a
1-1 record for the season. The relief specialist has made nine
appearances and struck out six batters.
Utes to Watch
Seniors Ryan Johnerson and Eric Wallace lead the Utes with 11 home
runs each and are tied for fourth in the Western Athletic Conference.
Johnerson leads the team with 52 hits, four triples, 32 RBI. He and
Ryan Hilts lead the Utes with 13 stolen bases. He is 20th in NCAA
Division I and fifth in WAC rankings in triples. He is ranked fourth
in the WAC in triples and home runs per game (.31). He has a .354
batting average and leads the Ute infielders with a .994 fielding
average. Wallace has a .331 batting average. He is second on the team
with 11 doubles and third with 40 hits. He is second in the WAC in
home runs per game (.38) and fifth with a .712 slugging percentage.
Junior Mike Goff leads the Utes with 13 doubles, ranking 15th in NCAA
Division I and is in the top 10 in the WAC. He has a .288 batting
average. Freshman Adam Castleton is second on the team with eight
home runs, 11 doubles and 27 RBI. He has a .271 batting average.
Junior Brandon Page leads the Ute pitching staff with a 6-2 record
and a 4.08 ERA. The junior is second on the team in strikeouts (55)
and innings pitched (70.2). He is ranked fifth in the WAC in wins and
12th in ERA. Senior slinger Lance Ericksen leads the Utes with 57
strikeouts, 78 innings pitched and three complete games. He is 3-3
with a 5.19 ERA. In WAC rankings, Ericksen is fourth in innings
pitched and complete games. Overall, the Utes are fifth in the WAC in
fielding (.958), sixth in pitching (6.42 ERA) and 10th in batting
(.279).
Next Week
Utah returns home to host Brigham Young and Hawai'i. The Utes play
the Cougars Tuesday (April 27) at 7:00 p.m. It is the second game of
the Utah-BYU non-conference series played in Salt Lake City. In the
first match-up, the Utes fell 9-2. The three-game series with Hawaii,
begins Thursday (April 29) at 7:00 p.m. Games are also scheduled for
Friday (April 30) at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday (May 1) at 12:00 p.m. All
games will be played at Franklin Covey Field.
Scouting San Jose State
The Spartans are 18-21 overall with an 8-10 WAC mark. San Jose State
has lost six of its last eight WAC games. The Spartans were swept by
Fresno State last week 11-5, 9-8 and 10-3. San Jose State was 1-2
against UNLV. The Spartans fell 9-8 and 5-2, while picking up a 6-0
victory. Second baseman Junior Ruiz has a .353 batting average. He
leads the Spartans with 49 hits and 30 runs. Vince LaCourte leads the
Spartan pitching staff with a 2.37 ERA. He is 5-2 with 62 strikeouts.
Jeremy Rogelstad is 3-6 with a 5.55 ERA and 63 strikeouts.
Last Week
The Utah baseball team was 2-1 against UNLV last weekend in Salt Lake
City. In the first game, the Utes defeated the Rebels 4-3. Freshman
second baseman Adam Castleton pounded his seventh home run of the
season to lead off the fourth inning. Eric Wallace and Ryan Johnerson
each slammed doubles to drive in one run. Utah added two more to the
tally in the sixth on another double by Wallace and a two-run home
run by freshman designated hitter Nate Weese. Brandon Page picked up
his sixth win of the season (6-2). The junior lasted seven innings
and had five strikeouts. Utah's sophomore relief specialist Brandon
Ballard earned the save. He pitched the last two innings yielding
only two hits and delivering one strikeout. In the second game, UNLV
scored one run in the first, but Utah rallied to score three runs in
both the second and third innings. In its first string of runs, Utah
scored three runs on four hits. Johnerson cracked a triple and Jamie
Hardy doubled. In the third, the Utes had three runs on one hit.
Johnerson doubled to score two. Utah scored two runs in the seventh
on back-to-back solo home runs by Johnerson and Wallace. The Utes
were unable to make a come back however, giving up three runs in the
top of the ninth for a 13-9 loss. Ryan Bailey (3-1) got the loss for
the Utes. Senior starter Brett McDermaid pitched five innings. In the
third game, Utah came alive in the bottom of the third scoring six
runs on five hits with one UNLV error. Freshman Castleton slammed a
home run over the left field fence to score three runs-it was his
second homer of the series and his eighth overall. Utah led 6-5
before scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home
run by Hardy. But, UNLV came back to tie the score in the ninth,
scoring three runs on two hits and a Utah error. Utah's Mike Goff
sealed the game for the Utes by hitting a solo home run in the bottom
of the 10th. The third baseman was 3-for-5 on the afternoon and had a
double. Lance Ericksen pitched nine innings for the Utes and tallied
seven strikeouts. Ballard earned the win, pitching one inning of
scoreless relief. Johnerson led the Utes with a .538 weekend batting
average. The senior pounded his 11th home run of the season. He was
7-for-13 also hitting two doubles and a triple. Wallace was 5-for-13
with a .384 weekend batting average. He also had two doubles and a
home run.
