SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Omar Bacon rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns and Utah survived a 97-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Hawaii and held off the Rainbows 30-21 Saturday night.
Utah led 20-0 at halftime, but two fumbles helped the Rainbows score all their 21 points in a 5:56 span of the third quarter. Utah reclaimed the lead minutes later on a field goal, and Bacon's 27-yard touchdown run with 1:14 to play sealed the win.
The Utes (3-0, 1-0 Western Athletic Conference) remained undefeated, but they have beaten three teams with a combined 1-7 record. Hawaii (0-2, 0-1) lost its eighth straight game and its 21st straight conference road game.
Midway through the third quarter, Utah quarterback Jonathan Crosswhite fumbled while attempting a sneak from the Hawaii 1. Linebacker Kamuela Cobb-Adams picked up the ball and sprinted 97 yards for the Rainbows' first touchdown.
On Utah's next play, running back Mike Anderson fumbled at his own 19. After the Rainbows kicked a field goal and the Utes punted, Hawaii quarterback Dan Robinson hit Dwight Carter with a 69-yard touchdown pass.
A 2-point conversion off a broken play gave the Rainbows a 21-20 lead with 4:41 left in the third quarter.
Ryan Kaneshiro kicked a 41-yard field goal on Utah's next possession to reclaim the lead. Quincy LeJay returned an interception 49 yards to the Utah 28 with 10:04 remaining, but three plays later, Hawaii's Chad Shrout missed the last of three failed field goal attempts.
