SALT LAKE CITY - The largest crowd ever to watch a football game in Salt Lake City was treated to a 45-22 Ute win over Louisville. The first game ever held in Rice-Eccles Stadium (the newest stadium in the nation), drew 44,112 spectators. Utah's defense was again spectacular creating five turnovers and keeping Louisville's high powered offense in check for most of the night.
Sophomore defensive back Andre Dyson, making his second career start, picked off his first career interception (one of two on the night) less than a minute into the game on the Louisville 29-yard line. It led directly to Utah's first touchdowna pass from Darnell Arceneaux to Boo Bendinger on Utah's very first offensive play of the game. Twelve seconds after Utah's score, Cardinals' QB Chris Redman threw another interception, this one picked off by sophomore linebacker Kautai Olevao on Louisville's 16-yard line. Again the Ute offense capitalizedthis time scoring on a 6-yard run by Mike Anderson. Anderson posted his second straight 100-yard game as a Ute, leading all rushers with 122 yards on 30 carries.
Utah scored in every quarter, posting 14 points in the first, second and fourth quarters. Omar Bacon made his first appearance of the year at running back and rushed 8 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Jonathan Crosswhite split play calling duties with starter Darnell Arceneaux, who completed 8 of 16 passes for 195 yards and 2 TDs, but was intercepted twice. Crosswhite was 3 of 6 for 35 yards (1 interception). Arceneaux also ran for a score. Daniel Jones caught 3 passes for 87 yards and 1 score.
