PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah men's tennis teamed downed BYU 6-1, on Tuesday, Apr. 13 in Provo. This was the second meeting of the year between the two schools. The Cougars won the first match in Salt Lake City, 5-2, on Feb. 15. Today, the Utes dominated, winning five of the six singles matches, and two out of the three doubles matches.
Ben Coates led the singles victories for the Utes with a straight set, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Manuel Calvo at the No. 1 position. Philippe Rodrigue topped Gert Vilms, 7-5, 6-3, at No.2, while Ashley Dyer waxed Damien Ward, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3. Trevor Ferguson defeated Nic Losee, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 4, as Adam Eke slammed Jeff Harbach, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 5 position. Kevin Zenger was the only Ute to fall, losing in three sets to David White, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
The Utes only loss in doubles play came as an upset as BYU's Calvo and Ward, who are unranked nationally, defeated Coates and Rodrigue, who hold a No. 15 national ranking, 8-6. Wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions salvaged the doubles point for the Utes. Ferguson and Zenger outlasted Harbach and White, 9-7, while Dyer and Nik Yip topped White and Benji Rideout, 8-5.
The win lifts Utah's record to 8-11 overall, and 2-3 in WAC play. The match concluded the regular season for both the Utes and Cougars. Both teams will travel to San Diego to compete in the WAC Championships which run from Apr. 21-24.
