TEMPE, Ariz. -- The University of Utah (2-2, 0-0 WAC) dropped its second straight match on Feb. 9 with a 6-1 loss at Arizona State (3-1, 1-1). The Utes' Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue, normally the No. 1 and No. 2 slotted players for Utah, did not compete in the match.
The Sun Devils took two out of three doubles matches to jump to a 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Tim Hammond and Jeff Williams downed Utah's Adam Eke and Trevor Ferguson, 9-7, while Arizona State's Ed Carter and Casey Was defeated the Ute No. 3 seed Ryan Snow and Patrick Wallebring, 8-0. Utah took one doubles match as Ashley Dyer and Nik Yip posted a 8-6 win over Matt Klinger and Alex Osterreith.
In singles play, Arizona State took five of the six matches. At No. 1, Williams downed Dyer, 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 and Osterrieth defeated Ferguson, 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 seed Carter marked a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Patrick Wallebring and Klinger beat Yip, 6-3, 6-2. Arizona State's No. 5 slotted Hammond downed Snow, 6-2, 6-4. The one Utah singles win took place on court No. 6 where Adam Eke Defeated Amir Ran, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-2.
The Utes return home this week to host a dual match against Idaho State on Feb. 12, at the Eccles Tennis Center.
