LOGAN, Utah -Jenny Monson hit a two-run home run as Utah scored three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Utah State 5-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader between the in-state rivals on Wednesday afternoon. Utah State won the opener 2-0 in eight innings.
Utah scored a run in the top of the second inning before Utah State tied the game in the third. The Utes went ahead for good 2-1 with a run in the fifth before putting the game away in the seventh. Monson hit her fourth home run of the season. Kristin Arbogast gave up only one earned run off of seven hits and struck out three in seven innings to improve to 8-9. Kelly Martin, who won the opener, took the loss in the night cap to fall to 6-15. The USU defense committed three errors behind her.
Sandy Millard blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and give the Aggies the win in the opener. Martin overwhelmed the Utah hitters, allowing just one hit and retired 22 batters in a row after a first inning single by pitcher Sarah Farnworth. Martin struck out four and walked just one in the eight-inning shutout. Farnworth struck out nine, but gave up two earned runs off of seven hits in 7-2/3 innings to fall to 9-8.
Utah State is now 8-22. Utah, now 17-17 overall and 3-3 in Western Athletic Conference play, hosts New Mexico for a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
