UTAH STATE RECAP: Utah used timely hitting and solid pitching performances from freshmen Sarah Farnworth and Kristin Arbogast to sweep a doubleheader from Utah State, 4-3 and 2-1, last Wednesday afternoon at Ute Field.
The Aggies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth on a RBI double from Emily Wilson and an RBI single from Sandy Millard. However, the Utes came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped of by a two-run home run by Sunny Smith, her third of the season. Lisa Hashimoto and Jenny Monson, who both went 2-for-3 from the plate in the game, singled and scored in the inning. Farnworth struck out eight in seven innings to pick up the win.
Arbogast was nearly untouchable in the night cap in a 2-1 Utah win, giving up only an unearned run in the top of the seventh. She also allowed just two hits and struck out four in seven innings of work. The Utes touched Utah State starter Kelly Martin for a run in both the first and fifth innings. Both Sandy Rhea and Amberly Johnson went 1-for-2 with a run scored for the Utes.
HAWAII SERIES RECAP: Utah dropped a four-game series to Hawaii last weekend. The 11th-ranked Rainbow Wahine took the first two games, winning 3-2 and 6-3, on Friday. Farnworth gave up three runs off of 11 hits. Kelly Gentle struck out six and gave up just five hits in seven innings.

HEAD COACH MONA STEVENS... is in her second season as Utahs head coach. Stevens owns a 73-37 overall record and a 36-22 mark against Western Athletic Conference teams. In her first season, Stevens led Utah to the NCAA Tournament and a third-place finish in the WAC. This past summer, Stevens coached the USA Softball National Team to the gold medal at the Pan Am Games qualifying tournament. She is one of the nine coaches that will form the USA Softball National Team coaches pool through the 2000 Summer Games.
The former Ute player and assistant coach came home in September of 1996 following a two-year stint at the University of Massachusetts. Stevens was the associate head coach for the Minutewomen during the 1995 and 96 seasons, and was named UMass head coach last June, three months prior to being hired by her alma mater. In each of her two seasons at UMass, Stevens helped the Minutewomen reach the NCAA Tournament and win the Atlantic-10 Conference regular-season and tournament championships. UMass posted a 78-37-1 combined record and a .667 overall winning percentage during Stevens tenure.
Stevens began her coaching career as an assistant at Utah from 1981-84. In addition to her collegiate coaching portfolio, Stevens has been a nationally recognized pitching instructor over the past 13 years. She has also worked internationally, and was the owner of Mona Stevens Enterprises from 1989-94.
QUOTING STEVENS: On the Hawaii series - This past weekend was obviously very difficult for us. The good news is that we hit their pitching pretty well, and theyve been able to hold people down offensively this year. We managed to score some runs against them but that was our only bright spot. We had a few moments on defense where some good things happened, but when you looked at the scoreboard and saw how many hits we gave up compared to how many errors we committed, that was the tell-tale sign of the series. None of our pitchers pitched their best games, and we need to regroup on mound and get some more determination.
On this week - We need to get back on top of our game this week. Hopefully we can get back on track starting with Southern Utah on Tuesday. We took two games from San Jose at their place earlier in the year, but they are a very good team that hits very well. We need to be ready to go against them. Against Fresno State, I hope that since it means so much to us to play them that we can really get up and take a game or two from them. If we can get our pitching in better shape, and reconnect with the things that weve done well, it will take some of the pressure off of our defense.
