Ute Play
The Utah baseball team hosts Brigham Young on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at
Franklin Covey Field. It is the first of three non-conference games to
be played between the Utes and the Cougars in Salt Lake City. The other
two games are scheduled for April 27 at 7:00 p.m. and May 5 at 5:00 p.m.
The Utah-BYU Western Athletic Conference series will be played in Provo,
Utah, May 13-15.
Utah is 15-15 and 3-7 in WAC play. Brigham Young is 17-17 with a 7-7 WAC mark. Last season the Utes were 4-2 versus the Cougars.
The Utes travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to play TCU in a three-game WAC series this weekend. Friday's game begins at 2:00 p.m. (CDT) Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
TCU leads the WAC with a 12-2 record and has a 20-13 overall record.
Utes to Watch
First baseman Ryan Johnerson leads the Utes with 40 hits, 26 RBI and is
tied for the team lead with nine home runs. He also leads the team with
a perfect 12 stolen bases. Johnerson is second on the team with a .331
batting average. He is tied for fourth in the Western Athletic
Conference in home runs and third in home runs per game.
Left fielder Eric Wallace has a .326 batting average and is tied for first on the team with nine home runs. In the WAC, he is tied for fourth in home runs.
Third baseman Mike Goff leads the team with 12 doubles. The junior has a .290 batting average and 13 RBI. He is fifth in doubles per game in the WAC.
Center fielder Ryan Hilts is fourth on the team with a .298 batting average. The senior is second on the team with 39 hits and 10 stolen bases. He has six doubles and 15 RBI.
Freshman Adam Castleton is second on the team with 22 RBI. The second baseman has a .288 batting average with nine doubles and six home runs. Lance Ericksen has a 3-3 record and a 5.20 ERA. He leads the Utes in complete games (3), innings pitched (64) and is tied for first with 48 strikeouts. He is second in the WAC in complete games and fifth in innings pitched.
Brandon Page has a 3.75 ERA with a 4-2 season record. The junior is tied for first on the pitching staff with 48 strikeouts and is second with 57.2 innings pitched. He has the 13th-lowest ERA in the WAC.
In WAC team rankings, the Utes are fourth in fielding (.960 ). Utah is fifth in pitching (5.90) and 10th in batting (.470).
Recent Results
The Utah baseball team trampled Air Force in a 12-1 victory last
Thursday. The Utes scored 12 runs on 16 hits with no errors. The win
brought Utah's season record to 15-15 and with a 3-7 Western Athletic
Conference mark.
Air Force scored its only run in the bottom of the first, but the Utes shut down the Falcons for the remaining eight innings.
In the top of the second, Utah began its offensive explosion when designated hitter Nate Weese walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on an error by the Falcons catcher. He was singled in by Jared Larsen. Two Ute walks and a single by Ryan Hilts brought in Utah's second run.
In the fourth inning, Mike Goff and Hilts singled and scored on a double by freshman Adam Castleton, giving the Utes a 4-1 lead.
The Utes dominated the plate in the fifth scoring six runs to take a 10-1 lead. Weese doubled and was singled in by Ryan Johnerson. Johnerson stole second and was singled in by Goff. Shortstop Jake Shortino doubled. He and Goff scored on a single by Hilts. Castleton cleared the bases when he slammed his sixth home run of the season over the right field fence.
Utah closed the scoring with two runs in the eighth inning. Johnerson reached first on a Falcon error and scored on a two-run homer by Mike Wood, his second of the season.
The remaining two games of the series were canceled due to snow. The teams are working to reschedule the games in Salt Lake City at a late date.
