SALT LAKE CITY - In a three-game series versus Mesa State Feb. 19-21, Utah was 2-1. The Utes dropped the first game 10-8 but won the last two 8-7 and 11-6. The series brings Utah's record to 9-5.
In the opener, Mesa State scored five runs in the first inning. The Utes came back in the third when Ryan Hilts, Jared Larsen and Eric Wallace each homered and Ryan Johnerson hit a triple. The Utes had eight runs on 14 hits with one error.
In the second game, Johnerson was 4-6 with two runs and four RBIs including one home run. Wallace was 2-6 with two runs and two RBIs. He had one double and one home run. Castleton was 3-6 with one run and one double. Freshman Ryan Bailey picked up his first win of the season, pitching three innings. He struck out five batters and yielded one hit. Utah had eight runs on 15 hits with three errors.
In the final game, Wallace was 5-5 with two runs and four RBI's. The senior hit two doubles and one home run. Over the weekend, Wallace batted .500, slamming three home runs and four doubles in eight hits. Third baseman Mike Goff was 3-5 with two runs and two RBIs. He had a double and a home run. Senior Lance Ericksen (2-1) picked up his second win in eight innings of work. He gave up 12 hits and five runs and recorded eight strikeouts. The Utes had 11 runs on 14 hits and two errors.
