Ute Travel
The Utah baseball team (10-10) travels to Cedar City, Utah, March
12-13 to play the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. The series opens with a
single game starting at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. A double header is
scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Thunderbirds are
6-19. Last year, the team finished 22-28. Utah was 4-1 against SUU
last year.
Utes to Watch
Senior Ryan Johnerson continues to have the big bat for the Utes. The
first baseman has a .353 batting average, and leads the team with 30
hits, seven doubles, two triples, six home runs and 21 RBI. He is
second on the team in stolen bases with eight of eight. In the field,
Johnerson has recorded 182 putouts, 14 assists and one error for a
.995 fielding average.
Freshman Adam Castleton has earned a permanent spot on the Ute starting lineup. The infielder has started 17 of the 19 games he has played. He has a .314 batting average and is second on the team in hits with 22. Castleton has five doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI. He is 2-3 in stolen bases.
Left fielder Eric Wallace also has a .314 batting average. The senior has 16 hits including four doubles, six home runs and 11 RBI.
Brandon Page (2-0) continues to lead the Ute mound staff with a 2.57 ERA. The junior has pitched 35 innings in seven appearances. He has yielded only 15 runs on 37 hits and leads the team in strikeouts with 26. Lance Ericksen (2-2) has a 6.23 ERA. The senior has pitched 39 innings in six appearances. He is second on the Ute squad with 25 strikeouts.
Recent Results
The Utah baseball team was 0-3 against San Diego State. The Utes fell
6-3, 5-2 and 9-2. Utah is 0-3 in Western Athletic Conference play and
10-10 overall. In the opener, the Utes had three runs on seven hits
with two errors against the Aztecs. Utah scored first in the top of
the third on a sacrifice fly by Wallace. San Diego State matched the
score with one run in the fourth. The score fish-tailed back and
forth, with Utah scoring in the fifth and the Aztecs bringing one
home in the sixth. SDSU clinched the game with a four-run seventh
inning. Utah added one run in the eighth.
Top performers for the Utes were designated hitter Nate Weese who was 2-4. Catcher Jared Larsen was 1-3 scoring two runs. Wallace was 1-4 hitting, one double and a stolen base. Jake Shortino was 1-3 (a double) and Castleton recorded one stolen base and one RBI.
In the second game, sophomore Jed Chrisman was 3-4 with one run scored. Brett McDermaid (2-2) pitched 6.2 innings facing 29 batters. He yielded nine hits and delivered two strikeouts. The Utes had two runs on 12 hits with one error.
In the final game, San Diego State leaped to an early 6-0 lead after four innings of play. The Utes scored two runs in the fifth when Wallace pounded his sixth home run of the season for a solo run. Johnerson tripled and was knocked in on a single by Chrisman. Utah didn't score again in the 9-2 loss. Utah had two runs on 15 hits with one error.
