SALT LAKE CITY - Chris Burgess, a 6-10, 250 pound forward, who played basketball the last two seasons at Duke, has signed a letter of financial assistance and announced his intent to transfer to the University of Utah. Under NCAA transfer rules, Burgess will have to sit out the 1999-2000 season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining, starting in 2000-01.
Burgess played at Duke during the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons, appearing in 75 games with 16 starts. Burgess started 13 games as a sophomore, averaging 5.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He also blocked 35 shots and shot 61.4 percent from the field. Burgess had three double-doubles and scored in double figures nine times with a career-high 16 points against Michigan on Dec. 12, 1998. As a freshman, Burgess averaged 4.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, and had 22 blocked shots.
The Irvine, Calif., native played his freshman year as a prep at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., and his last three years at Woodbridge High School. As a senior, Burgess was named the 1996-97 Sporting News National Player of the Year, a Naismith Award Top-Five Finalist and a McDonald's All-American. He was also a first-team All-America choice by Parade and USA Today.
