SALT LAKE CITY - An appearance in the Preseason National Invitation Tournament, 17 regular-season home games and a record number of appearances on national and regional televison highlight the 1999-2000 Utah men's basketball schedule. In addition, the regular tip-off for all home games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center will be moved up to 7:00 p.m.
Utah opens its 92nd season by participating in the Preseason NIT. Along with the Utes, the 16-team field is headlined by two-time Preseason NIT champion Arizona, 1999 NCAA Final Four participant Ohio State and 1999 regional finalists Kentucky and Maryland. Rounding out the field are Arkansas State, Davidson, Fordham, Hofstra, Kansas State, New Mexico State, Notre Dame, Pennsylvania, San Francisco, Siena and Tulane.
The Utes host their first round game against Arkansas State on Nov. 16 in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Utah and Arkansas State met in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season with the Utes prevailing 80-58.
Should Utah win its NIT first round game, it would face the winner of Kentucky/Pennsylvania at a site to be determined after the first round. Utah's second round NIT game would be televised by ESPN on Nov. 19 at 5:00 p.m. (MST). The Utes and Wildcats last met in the 1998 NCAA championship game when Kentucky came from behind to post a 78-69 win. ESPN will also televise NIT semifinals (Nov. 24) and championship game (Nov. 26) from New York's Madison Square Garden.
The rest of Utah's schedule is highlighted by 11 games against teams that were invited to postseason play in 1998-99. During the non-conference portion of its schedule, Utah has a road game against in-state rival Weber State, which advanced to the second round of the NCAAs last season, on Dec. 1 in Odgen, Utah. Other in-state teams on Utah's schedule include: Utah State (Dec. 7), Southern Utah (Jan. 1). Both of those games will take place in the Huntsman Center.
Texas, which lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season, visits the Huntsman Center on Dec. 22 for a game televised by ESPN at 10:00 p.m. (MST). The Utes and Longhorns will meet for the sixth time in the last seven years, with Utah winning three of those contests.
Utah also faces 1999 NCAA Tournament participant Louisville on Jan. 6 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. The Cardinals, who lost in the first round of the NCAAs, have not played the Utes since Dec. 20, 1980, when the U. won 78-59 in Louisville. Utah leads the series 2-1.
The Utes' non-conference schedule also features two games against Pac-10 Conference foes. Utah heads to Pullman, Wash., on Dec. 11 to face Washington State and hosts Oregon State on Dec. 28.
Once Utah begins its inaugural Mountain West Conference schedule, it will face New Mexico, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, and NIT participants Colorado State, UNLV and Wyoming. The 2000 Mountain West Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 9-11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Utes will be featured at least 10 times on ABC, ESPN and ESPN Regional Television, the maximum number of appearances allowed under the Mountain West Conference's seven-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. The Utes will also have 10 games televised locally by KJZZ-TV. The tentative KJZZ schedule features road games against Weber State (Dec. 1), Washington State (Dec. 11), Louisville (Jan. 6), Air Force (Jan. 29) and UNLV (Feb. 5), and home games against Utah State (Dec. 7), Oregon State (Dec. 28), San Diego State (Feb. 10), Brigham Young (Feb. 12) and Air Force (Mar. 4). In all, at least 20 Utah games will be televised, including all 14 Mountain West Conference regular-season games.
Utah's game at New Mexico on Feb. 19 will be broadcast regionally by ABC at 4:00 p.m. (MST). Five of Utah's Mountain West Conference games three of which are at home?will also be televised as a part of ESPN's "Big Monday" line-up at 10:00 p.m. (MST). The national cable network will carry Utah's games at San Diego State on Jan. 10, Colorado State at home on Jan. 24, New Mexico at home on Jan. 31, UNLV at home on Feb. 21 and at Wyoming on Feb. 28.
ESPN Regional Television, a syndicated over-the-air network, will feature Utah three times in its Mountain West Conference "Game of the Week" package. Utah's games at Brigham Young on Jan. 15, at home against Wyoming on Jan. 22 and at Colorado State on Feb. 26 will be carried by ESPN Regional. KJZZ-TV is the network's Salt Lake City affiliate.
"I feel a great deal of empathy for our fans as we release this schedule because there is the inconvenience of many Monday and 10:00 p.m. games, which appears to be a league decision," said Ute head coach Rick Majerus. "Apart from that, our schedule is as strong as any, and perhaps the strongest, in the league. We play two Pac-10 teams and face who is probably going to be the freshman of the year in the Pac-10 Conference, a young man named Brian Jackson from Oregon State. We're very excited to play the defending Big-12 champ Texas with Chris Mihm, whom many NBA scouts feel will be the No. 1 pick in next year's draft. We're also delighted to be traveling to Louisville, Ky., and taking on a contender for the Conference USA championship. It's always special to be playing in Freedom Hall and the state of Kentucky. Obviously, there is the eventuality that we may face Kentucky. We were promised two home games by the NIT, however, in the event that we are fortunate enough to win game one, we will likely travel to Kentucky for game two.
"Our league schedule is very demanding," continued Majerus. "Many teams return a lot of players, and I am excited for that challenge, as well. We have numerous TV games on ESPN. Our expectation is that we will be prepared to play those games due to a rigorous non-conference schedule."
The Utes will play two exhibition games, hosting a foreign team on Nov. 5 and the California All-Stars on Nov. 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the Huntsman Center.
