SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior point guard Andre Miller has been named as the recipient of the 1998-99 Joe Kearney Award, honoring the male athlete of the year in the Western Athletic Conference. Named in honor of former WAC commissioner Joe Kearney, the award is given annually to the WAC's top male athlete as selected by the conference athletic directors.
Miller, a native of Los Angeles, adds the Kearney Award to a long list of accomplishments in his senior year. The 1999 WAC Player of the Year was recognized as a first team All-American by the Associated Press, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, United States Basketball Writer's Association, Wooden and Basketball Weekly, and was also named the Basketball Weekly Player of the Year. Utah's all-time leader in career steals (254), Miller garnered first-team all-WAC, all-WAC Defensive team and WAC All-Tournament team honors. He was also a finalist for the Wooden, Naismith and Oscar Robinson Player of the Year awards.
During the 1998-99 season Miller ranked second in the conference in steals (2.6 spg), fourth in assists (5.6 apg), eighth in field goal percentage (.491) and 12th in scoring (15.8 ppg), while finishing with 721 career assists, the second most in Utah history. He recorded three double-doubles in both points and rebounds and points and assists, and was named MVP of the Great Eight Tournament. As Utah's team captain, he led the Utes in points, assists and steals.
Said head coach Rick Majerus, "With Andre as our floor general, Utah went 114-20, won four WAC Championships, two WAC Tournaments, appeared in four NCAA Tournaments and finished second in the 1998 Final Four. He has led his team through the greatest four-year run in the history of Utah basketball and the Western Athletic Conference."
Throughout his career, Miller has lived up to the potential he showed when he was named to the WAC All-Newcomer team in 1995-96. The next year, he had 73 steals to set a single-season school record while also earning a spot on the WAC All-Tournament team. In the 1997-98 season, he recorded a triple-double with 18 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists against Arizona in the NCAA West Regional final. He was a first team all-WAC and all-WAC Defensive team pick and was twice named WAC Player of the Week.
Miller served as a leader and role-model both on and off the court. During his college career he was heavily involved in Utah's CHAMPS/I.D. Life Skills program and the Ute speakers bureau. He received a degree in sociology in June of 1998, and was taken in the first round of the 1999 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Additional 1998-99 Kearney Award male nominees include Blane Morgan, Air Force, Leonard Myles-Mills, Brigham Young, Bryan Berryhill, Colorado State, Stephen Abas, Fresno State, Nick Folker, Hawaii, Jeremy Anderson, UNLV, Brian Urlacker, New Mexico, Mario Ramos, Rice, Alex Waske, San Diego State, Todd Duncan, San Jose State, Ignacio Hirigoyen, SMU, Royce Huffman, TCU, Brian Young, UTEP, Michael Ruffin, Tulsa, and Greg Sawyer, Wyoming.
