SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Louisville gets another chance to climb into the Top 25 on Thursday when the Cardinals play host to No. 22 Utah.
Louisville (8-3) has won three straight, highlighted by a 97-80 rout of then-No. 6 North Carolina on Dec. 23. The Cardinals didn't show any rust from the ensuing 11-day layoff, opening Conference USA play with an 81-70 victory over Tulane on Monday.
Tony Williams had 22 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals for Louisville, which shot 53 percent from the field and had 12 steals.
"It was a good win for us despite not playing one of our better games - not nearly as good as we're capable of, anyway," Cardinals coach Denny Crum said. "We didn't execute like I'd have liked to, but (the Green Wave) are a Top 30 team and that's a step in the right direction."
Louisville has an explosive frontcourt in Williams and Nate Johnson, who are averaging 17.7 and 17.1 points per game, respectively. Guard Marques Maybin has come into his own as a junior, contributing 16 points per game. Maybin, however, is only 5-for-35 from 3-point range.
Utah (11-2) is looking for its 10th straight victory and will be getting its final tuneup for Mountain West Conference play. The Utes opened 2000 with a 73-56 victory over Southern Utah last Saturday.
Hanno Mottola had 20 points and 10 rebounds as Utah finished with a 39-22 advantage on the boards.
Despite averaging 24 points and shooting 61.4 percent from the field in five games since returning from a knee injury, the Finnish senior forward does not feel his game is 100 percent yet.
"I wasn't sharp tonight, and I'm not happy with my game," Mottola said. "I tend to get up for the bigger games and not up for the smaller games."
Utah is 1-2 on the road this season, losing to Kentucky in the second round of the Preseason NIT and also falling to Weber State. The Utes did record a 78-66 win at Washington State on Dec. 11.
Forward Alex Jensen is second on the team in scoring at 13.9 points per game and leads Utah in rebounding at 6.9 per game. Jeremy Killion is hitting 48.3 percent of his shots from 3-point range and averaging 11.3 points.
Utah leads the all-time series 2-1. The schools have not met since a 78-59 Utes victory at Louisville on Dec. 29, 1980.
